Distinguished and Famous people from Greater Brisbane

Across Greater Brisbane, notable lives connect city suburbs with island communities and very different kinds of public work. Literature, Aboriginal cultural education and municipal development each have a substantial local history.

📚 David Malouf

David Malouf's early life was spent in South Brisbane, followed by study at Brisbane Grammar School and the University of Queensland. His books repeatedly drew on memory and place, with Brisbane prominent in Johnno and 12 Edmondstone Street. A poet as well as a novelist and essayist, he also wrote opera libretti. The local link is formative upbringing and education, not an assumption that every later work was written in Brisbane.

📚 Oodgeroo Noonuccal

Oodgeroo Noonuccal's childhood and later teaching were closely associated with Minjerribah, North Stradbroke Island. A poet, rights campaigner and educator, she published under the name Kath Walker before adopting Oodgeroo Noonuccal. Her work included advocacy around the 1967 referendum and, after returning to the island in 1971, cultural teaching for visiting schoolchildren. Books such as Stradbroke Dreamtime connected writing with that educational purpose. The island relationship remained central to her public life.

Her Brisbane life also included competitive sport. During her army-service years she founded a women’s cricko team, the Brisbane All-Blacks; the game later became known as vigoro. She represented Queensland twice. The poet and campaigner had a sporting chapter too, alongside the political and literary work for which she became much better known.

🏛️ Clem Jones

Clem Jones served as Brisbane's lord mayor from 1961 to 1975, during a period of major changes to roads, sewerage and other city infrastructure. A surveyor by training, he also supported sport, community facilities and charitable work, including the Carina centre that bears his name. His career extended beyond Brisbane when he helped direct Darwin's reconstruction after Cyclone Tracy. Greater Brisbane's connection rests on substantial municipal and community work, with the city itself the main arena of his public career.
